A Moment of Communication

My name is Gareth Qually and I will be writing on my journeys and discoveries about film making on the net.

I am sure that if I mention the words 'alien song', it will trigger fits of laughter from some of you. For the uninitiated I will explain.

I am on this mailing list for an animation package called Animation Master  www.hash.com. One of the lists participants is Victor Navone. About a year ago he mailed us all to say he finished his latest animation called Alien Song, and he wanted our thoughts. I promptly downloaded it and watched....

I laughed like you will not believe. The synopsis of this hilarious animation is an alien singing to Gloria Gaynor's ' I will survive'. Rather than describe it go and download it.

Alien Song Mpeg or at Victor's site

After watching this short 20 or 30 times, and parading it to friends and family, I started to hear friends telling me about it. This happened more and more. Word of mouth was working with the net as its facilitator. Needless to say this animation has become a bit of a legend. A visit to Victor's site even shows a FAQ. Later posts to the list spoke of Sinbad (the comedian) going nuts and giving Victor loads of warm fuzzies. Even Time magazine has a mention in one of its articles.

Victors reason for doing this piece was as a study into animation. As a result he is now working at Pixar ( Toy Story/Bugs Life creators ).I find it amazing how the net is helping the individual get their work out to an audience. Apart from the great explosion of subject matter and varying production methods, the things that I love the most about the new net films is that it is bringing back the short film. I really love the way short films can deal with an idea succinctly and powerfully, plus it is short. What a pleasure to go to a few sites and download a few short films, and basically set up your evenings entertainment. Most of the time you can e-mail the creator back to tell them what you thought. There is a industry about to start boiling here. With a massive amount of wonderful ideas and stories floating about, it is just a matter of time.

The Time article I mentioned a while back has a nice overview of what is happening in film and the net. Also, go and read Wired magazine's 7.10 issue that covers digital movie making.

Now while I plan my digital 'Citizen Kane' I will take leave of you, only to speak once more in a month's time. If you want to comment or question me, contact me at [email protected]
